All About Serta, the Manufacturer of the iSeries Mattress

perfect sleeper

If you haven’t heard of the Serta Perfect Sleeper, you could very well be living under a rock or in some cave in the wilderness but, and we’ll go easy on you. We’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you simply haven’t heard of one of America’s top-selling mattress manufacturers that’s actually been around since 1931. We’ve included one of their elegant, vintage posters advertising one of their best-selling mattresses – the Serta Perfect Sleeper.

Originally founded as the Sleeper, Inc., the mattress company is now known as Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC or “SSB”. Having pioneered many firsts in mattress technology and sleep comfort, Serta has become known as one of the most influential bedding manufacturers in the country and around the world. They own and manage the National Bedding Company L.L.C. (the largest licensee and majority shareholder of Serta, Inc.), Simmons Bedding Company, LLC, and Tuft & Needle, LLC. From their company’s humble beginnings in Illinois, Serta now has 30+ manufacturing facilities around the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

Needless to say, if you decide to invest in a Serta mattress, you are investing in years and years of experience in sleeping comfort.

But, no matter how experienced the company or manufacturer is, there is not one single sleep product available on earth that pleases everyone 100%. That’s why we’re going to take a closer look at Serta’s iSeries hybrid mattress models. After you’ve read our reviews, you may soon be the proud, new owner of a Serta iSeries mattress or, you may want to move on to something else.

Point is – we’ll give you an honest, unbiased look of the Serta iSeries with the goal of helping you make an informed purchasing decision.

To lay the groundwork, though, you may ask – what is the Serta iSeries, anyway? Is it an actual mattress? Is that what the mattress is called?

Well – yes and no.

The name “iSeries” is actually a term with all rights reserved by Serta. It is an innovative piece of mattress technology designed by Serta’s team of experts. That said, their iSeries mattress technology comes in several variations. Let’s talk about each one of them in the next section of this article.

Serta iSeries® Hybrid Mattress Types - Pros, Cons, Our Verdict

We’ll start with Serta’s very own iSeries collection of hybrid mattresses.

For those that are not too familiar with mattress terminologies – a hybrid mattress typically contains combined layers of both memory foam or latex over a specific type of innerspring system. Simply put, a hybrid mattress is the opposite of an all-foam mattress (no innerspring systems in place) or a purely spring mattress (no foam layers in place).

But Serta’s leveled up their hybrid mattress up a notch by combining key features:

  • Cool Reaction® Gel Memory Foam – the Serta trademarked mattress component that keeps the sleeper cool.
  • 886 Pro-Support™ Coil System with Best Edge® Foam Encasement – the Serta trademarked mattress component that provides firm support to the body’s pressure points.
  • HyperFeel™ Surface Design cover – the Serta trademarked component that brings the cool touch of memory foam on top of the bed allowing the sleeper to actually “feel” the cradling comfort of Serta’s “intelligent”, luxury memory foam.

While slightly different from the other, each model features its own special characteristics. Think of them as siblings who display unique personalities.

That said, each Serta iSeries hybrid mattress suits different sleep positions, firmness levels, and varying construction and design.

Basic info:

  • Height: 13.5”
  • Firmness level: Extra-firm
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Price: Varies depending on which retailer the mattress is purchased from. You can find the closest Serta Retailer to your location here.

This mattress is best for:

  • People who prefer extra-firm beds e.g. people looking for back-pain relief or those that may have issues with the neck or spine.
  • Back sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers

Pros

  • Many customers find this mattress to be affordably-priced. Again, this depends on the retailer where you purchase this from.
  • For customers that love an extra-firm feel to their mattress, they absolutely love the near-perfect firmness level of this mattress.
  • Customers who previously had experience with too-soft, lumpy mattresses find that with this mattress, they wake up feeling refreshed each morning.
  • Many customers say positive things about back pain relief after a full night's sleep on this mattress.

Cons

  • This one is more of a tip than an actual “con” - make sure you actually like to sleep on an extra-firm mattress before you purchase this mattress. Some customers who didn't research mattress firmness levels are needing to look for a softer mattress model after purchasing this one as they eventually found it too firm for their needs.
  • Some customers say that this mattress (and other Serta iSeries hybrid mattresses) tend to overheat despite the cooling technology within it. It's quite possible that this may not be the best mattress for: hot sleepers, sleepers that may live in warmer areas or, have naturally warm temperatures compared with others. If that is the case, we advise you to invest in a cooling mattress pad or a cooling sleep system.

Serta iSeries Hybrid 300 Plush Mattress

mattress firm isr 300

Basic info:

  • Height: 13.5”
  • Firmness Level: Plush (soft, non-firm feel)
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Price: Varies depending on which retailer the mattress is purchased from. You can find the closest Serta Retailer to your location here.

This mattress is best for:

  • People who prefer the hugging, contouring comfort of soft, plush mattresses.
  • People who do not suffer from any back pain or discomfort should be comfortable with this type of mattress. If you have back pain, you would generally need a firmer mattress.
  • Side sleepers
  • Some combination sleepers who prefer plush mattresses.

Pros

  • Many Serta customers say that this mattress is the best of both worlds - it's plush enough to feel soft, but not too soft that you get that uncomfortable "sinking". feeling. And, because of Serta's 886 Pro-Support™ technology, it still offers the firm support that some people love, as well.
  • Due to its unparalleled comfort and support it provides, many customers say that it's affordably-priced for the quality it provides.

Cons

  • There are not too many cons about this type of mattress as most customers generally love its extremely plush feeling yet we will say that if you tend to prefer extra-firm mattresses and find soft, memory foam mattresses, uncomfortable then this isn't the right mattress for you.
  • Back and stomach sleepers may find that this mattress doesn't offer the support provided by extra-firm mattresses.

Serta iSeries Hybrid 500 Cushion Firm Mattress

mattress firm isr 500 seals

Basic info:

  • Height: 14”
  • Firmness Level: Firm or Average-Firm (this is the second firmest mattress of the iSeries hybrid mattress collection, just after the iSeries Hybrid Mattress 100 Firm)
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Price: Varies depending on which retailer the mattress is purchased from. You can find the closest Serta Retailer to your location here.

This mattress is best for:

  • Since the firmness level of this mattress is categorized as “average-firm” then this mattress is generally best for people who suffer from back pain or discomfort.
  • Back sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers

Pros

  • While firm, it still offers the signature iSeries contouring, hugging comfort of their "intelligent" memory foam.To quote some Serta customer reviews, it "feels like sleeping on a cloud".
  • People who suffer from back pain who need a firm mattress but also want to feel the soft comfort of a memory foam mattress will love sleeping on this mattress.
  • Many customers say that this mattress is reasonably priced for the great quality it provides.

Cons

  • There are few customers who report that this mattress has felt softer than it should be and is sinking a few months after purchase even with its 14" thickness. However, sleep experts say that mattresses, regardless of what brand, will sag (or sink) if not cared for properly or perhaps due to prolonged, improper use. Should you consider purchasing this Serta iSeries mattress, please contact their support line to know more about caring for a Serta mattress.
  • If you're not an "in-between" person and prefer either a soft mattress or an extra-firm mattress (no gray area in between), then this mattress may not be for you.

Serta iSeries Hybrid 1000 Firm Mattress

mattress firm isr 1000 seals

Basic Info:

  • Height: 15.6”
  • Firmness level: Medium-firm
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Price: Varies depending on which retailer the mattress is purchased from. You can find the closest Serta Retailer to her location here.

This mattress is best for:

  • Side sleepers will love the medium-firm level of this mattress as it helps align the spine as well as provide proper comfort and pressure point relief to their hips and shoulders.
  • Anyone who wants something in between soft and firm will love this mattress.

Pros

  • Just like with the other Serta iSeries hybrid mattress models, many customers find this mattress reasonably priced for its quality.
  • Customers say they feel like they are "sleeping on a marshmallow" - which can only mean good things.
  • Side sleepers will immediately feel relief on main pressure point areas e.g. hips and shoulders.

Cons

  • A small percentage of users find that this mattress wears down too easily after a few years' use, some other customers also claim that theirs has broken down to the point of disuse after only a couple of years. However, like all other mattress brands, caring for your mattress properly will help preserve its quality and lengthen its life span. Should you consider purchasing this Serta iSeries mattress, please contact their support line to know more about caring for a Serta mattress specifically.

Overall, when you buy an iSeries® mattress, it should offer you the following features and benefits:

  • Distinct, comforting and cradling support offered by “intelligent” luxury memory foam
  • Integrated within the luxury memory foam is an advanced innerspring coil system that offers firm support to any body type
  • Infused within the memory foam is Serta’s revolutionary cool action gel that works to dissipate heat away from the body while you sleep through the night
  • Microgel beans within the memory foam compress under the weight of the body’s pressure points, therefore, offering support the body needs allowing you to wake up with fewer aches and pains
  • It’s all topped up with a specially-designed cover that’s cool and comfortable at first touch.

How does Serta achieve the above features and benefits?

By designing each iSeries mattress so that it contains Serta’s very own trademarked mattress component technologies:

  • Cool Reaction® Gel Memory Foam
  • 886 Pro-Support™ Coil System with Best Edge® Foam Encasement
  • HyperFeel™ Surface Design cover

Plus a great team of experts and engineers who work hard to give each sleeper the best sleep each night.

When the above components are combined, it results in a comfortable, supportive, and cooling mattress.

However, please note that there are still some (very few) complaints about the Serta iSeries hybrid mattresses:

  • A strong chemical smell of the item once delivered, however, customers also say that it does go away after a few days.
  • Sagging or sinking after only a few years of use. There seems to be no clear indication as to why this happens to some Serta iSeries mattresses, however, per our own research, it seems to happen on a case-to-case basis.

Our recommendation would be to:

Find out how to properly care for a Serta mattress or find tips for mattress care, in general. There are specific ways to care for your mattress and prolong its life span while maintaining its firmness.

  • Overheating in the middle of the night. Some customers complain of being hot and being woken up from their sleep because they tend to feel hotter than usual when sleeping on this mattress. Again, there seems to be no clear explanation as to why this happens to some sleepers but doesn’t happen to others – even when they purchase the exact, same type of mattress. One plausible explanation could be the fact that iSeries mattresses do feature a gel memory foam component. Memory foam is known to absorb heat.

Our personal recommendation to address this issue would be to check if:

  • you are someone who generally has a warmer temperature than others (yes, some people are just literally “hot”)
  • your bedroom is located in a warmer part of your home
  • you live in a warmer part of the country

We believe that these factors may contribute to having mattresses overheat, regardless of brand.

If you’d like to know more about the issues above, we suggest that you contact Serta directly.

FAQs

Since the answer to this question contains legal information, it's best to get your answers directly from Serta's warranty page: https://www.serta.com/warranty

Again, we direct your attention to Serta's Returns & Exchanges page as these include very specific information depending on which product you purchase: https://www.serta.com/faq#/returns-exchanges

Luckily, Serta has been around for the past 89 years and has compiled quite a comprehensive knowledge base of information regarding the proper bedding care of their mattresses. You can find that information here.

The iSeries hybrid mattress collection is only available at certain retail stores. This means that you cannot purchase it directly from serta.com. Check out Serta’s store locator page to find a retailer near you.

This depends on the retailer that you purchase your iSeries mattress from. Some may include a box spring together with the mattress (sold as a set for a reduced price) while some may not.

Most Serta products come with a 120-day trial period where you can determine if you're happy with the mattress or not but, unfortunately, this does not apply to the iSeries mattresses as it is not sold by Serta directly. Their policies state that mattresses sold by retailers only do NOT offer the 120-day in-home trial period. You can check their returns/exchanges page for your options:https://www.serta.com/faq#/returns-exchanges.

This is a great question and one that everyone needs to be aware of. Other than basing this decision on your own personal sleeping preferences, one other great way of knowing exactly what fits you is to consult a health professional or sleep expert. Usually, if you are not experiencing any sleeping problems, sleeping anywhere, everywhere and on any type of mattress is no issue. It is usually only when we have specific health concerns that we need to address the type of mattress we sleep on and our sleeping environment as sleep is very important to our overall physical and mental health.

For physical issues like back, neck, shoulder or hip pain - consult a licensed health professional that is trained and experienced in addressing these specific issues.

For mental health issues that result in sleeplessness or over-sleeping - consult a licensed mental health professional that is trained and experienced in addressing these specific issues.

Health professionals can not only tell you if you need a new, specific type of mattress, but they can also give you great medical advice and solutions in regards to your specific sleep issues.

Our Verdict

Each Serta iSeries hybrid mattress offers an individual, responsive feel to each sleeper that makes them enjoy the best of both mattress worlds – the soft, cradling feel of luxury memory foam and the firm mattress support of an advanced innerspring coil system all while keeping you cool, regardless of your body type.

So – the big question:

Do we recommend the Serta iSeries hybrid mattresses?

To the right sleeper, yes! There seems to be an overwhelming number of positive reviews compared to negative reviews for this mattress. The common feedback is that they’ve never had a better night’s sleep once they purchased an iSeries mattress and that a lot of their sleeping discomfort related to back pain has been relieved after sleeping on an iSeries mattress. This tells us that, to date, the iSeries collection from Serta has offered many customers a great night’s sleep.

If you believe you have difficulty sleeping due to physical aches and pains, have PTSD or other similar mental health conditions, it is best to personally consult a medical or psychological health professional.
