Are you fond of lullaby songs?

Then this song might sound just familiar –

And count up all the sheep
As you tumble off to sleep
When you must snooze, it’s wonderful to use sheep to help you sleep

As kids, we were taught to count sheep on a sleepless night. Then we would go 1 sheep, 2 sheep, 3 sheep, and then all doze off and start collecting Zs.

Everything was easy – back then.

Those were the days, but as we grew older and wiser, we would end up counting an entire field of sheep, yet here we are still wide awake.

Unfortunately, kids, the real world is not about lullaby songs – it is about facts and solutions.

Where is this conversation taking us?

Aside from neck to neck deadlines, anxiety, stress, left-over adrenaline:  Why is falling asleep so difficult?

The answer to that is just right under you. Yes, you heard me right “under” you. It’s your mattress.

Here are your must-know facts about choosing the right mattress to give you those sweet dreams.

Say goodbye to counting sheep!

The original Purple is engineered with the original Hyper-Elastic Polymer; the new version includes a SoftFlex cover design that utilizes polyfoam around the comfort layer to enhance the mattress’s edge support.

The Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme is built with four district layers of foam, which is why it has been called the “soft mattress” and provides utmost relief, body contouring, and sinkage.

Cover:

Purple:  A new cover is added to the collection, and this is called the SoftFlex Material made from polyester, viscose, and lycra. These materials allow the mattress to be more comfortable and increase airflow.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: The cover is engineered with polyester and spandex, which gives a comfortable and breathable feel and this material snaps back into place real quick.

Comfort Layer:

Purple: This layer is made of the Purple’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This one of a kind grid foam brings in the comfort and support that you need. That is why if you are a combo-sleeper, this ought to be the mattress for you. The grids of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer bring in comfort and great airflow. Combo sleepers love the extra edge support too.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: It is a soft mattress, the comfort layer is made of 2 inches of memory foam. This layer brings relief to the sleeper because of that body contouring feature as they lay down to sleep.

Transition Layer:

Purple: This layer is made up of 3.5 inches of high-density polyfoam. The foam prevents the sleeper from sinking too deep into the mattress. Combo sleepers love the idea that they can move around comfortably while they sleep or rest.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: It is a soft mattress, the comfort layer is made of 2 inches of memory foam. This is similar to the spandex and polyester layer in the cover but a little firmer. This layer serves as a transition foam from the soft side down to the dense layer below.

Support Layer:

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: This layer has about 4 inches of what we call polyurethane foam. This material assists in body contouring as the sleeper lays to bed. Despite that softness, this layer provides extra support to the entire mattress.

Base/Foundation Layer:

Purple: The mattress is supported by 4 inches of high-density foam, which plays a vital role in the overall firmness.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: A 3.5″ of polyurethane foam supports the mattress, giving the foam, solid compression.

In-Depth Look:

After looking into the mattress’ structure. Here are a few more things a sleeper should look into when choosing a mattress. If you are a hot sleeper, you may want to consider a more breathable mattress. If you are a side sleeper, you opt to choose a cushion-like mattress and contours to the shape of your body as you lay down.

Durability: Commercially, a mattress’s longevity should run about 6-8 years – but of course this would vary depending on the quality of materials that were used to build it. Durable mattresses include high-density memory foam, latex, and steel coils. We also need to consider how often does a sleeper lay on the mattress.

Motion Isolation: Transfer of motion is something that has to be highly considered. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to have a mattress that absorbs movement so as not to feel any movement transferring – most especially if you sleep with a partner.

Some beds are the exact opposite. For average sleepers – there is a mattress that offers the best of both worlds, bringing in comfort and less motion transfer.

Sex: Every pair has a different preference for their choice of mattress. The preferred bed is something that would provide ease to the couple. A cushion-like mattress may prevent movement, while a firm mattress may also be inconvenient for romantic nights.

Most couples would most likely go for a quiet mattress for close-lipped sex.

Temperature Neutrality: Now, this part is a bit tricky. You would be surprised that some mattresses end up absorbing one’s body temperature causing the bed to be quite warm; these are usually beds with memory foams.

On the other hand, some mattresses are breathable and promote airflow. These mattresses are usually made from viscose and organic cotton.

Pressure Relief: At this point, we are aware that some mattresses are soft, and some mattresses can be firm. Though this brings relief in some parts of the body, it can be the opposite in some cases.

Soft mattresses tend to let your body sink in. Side sleepers like this better since it contours to the shape of their body and gives that blanket-feel. But later on, this gives a feeling of pressure to parts of your body like your hips, shoulders. Firm mattresses, later on, may cause you some inconvenience at some point.

The best mattresses for pressure relief are mattresses that are soft enough to give body-contour but, at the same time, provide enough support to the body.

Off-Gassing: You recall that funny smell your mattress makes after unboxing it?

Yes?

This is what you call “off-gassing”. Funny as it sounds, some mattresses do this because they are just simply new, but some mattresses tend to have it for the long haul. Beds with foam later tend to release more of this odor because of the component called Volatile Organic Compounds. If you are quite uneasy with this kind of off-gassing smell, then mattresses with little or no foam are better for you. Mattresses with coil layers have less off-gassing.

Ease of Movement: When we say “ease of movement”, this refers to how even the bed’s surface is, and it also measures how easy it is to get out of the bed. Soft mattresses tend to sink you in, causing waves of movement and may become a problem if you sleep with a light-sleeper partner.

It is best to go for a medium-firm mattress that won’t sag but gives you enough comfort but fewer movement waves.

Edge of Support: Mattresses that provide strong perimeter support around the edges enable you not to sink when you tend to roll closer to the edges. Some bed edges tend to sink; that is why you would need to lay down close to the center as much as possible.

It always boils down to what materials are being used. These play a vital role in determining how much edge support can a mattress gives.

Your Last-Minute Check-list:

We are finally getting to the last part of your mattress journey. After checking on the essentials like prices, we checked on what a mattress is made of, and we read through a few more points to consider – now is time for our last minute check-list.

Shipping:

Purple: Purple offers free ground shipping within the United States; this should take about 5 business days. Purple mattresses prepped for delivery are compressed, vacuumed-sealed, and, more importantly, wrapped in plastic. However, if you live in Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada you will need to pay extra for shipping.

Items will be delivered by UPS, FedEx, and other shipping carriers.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: These guys offer free white glove delivery within the US. If you are from Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, or US territory, there will be a default shipping fee of $600. Unfortunately, Tempur-Pedic doesn’t offer ground shipping for their deliveries.

Returns:

Purple: These guys offer a 100-night sleep trial, but should you decide to return the mattress, they would recommend sleeping on the mattress for at least 30 nights. If you feel that you are not happy about the mattress and decide to return it before the 100-night sleep trial, Purple will cover all shipping fees needed to return it.

You have the option to switch out your Purple mattress with another model mattress, but when you do, you will not get any trial period for the replacement item.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: They offer a 90-night sleep trial and highly recommend sleeping on the mattress for 30 nights. If you consider returning it, you will receive a full refund of the mattress’ price as a customer, but you would need to cover shipping fees to return it.

Warranty:

Purple: They offer a 10-year non-prorated warranty for all of their mattress models. There are what we call recognized defects such as body impressions from sleeping, and it measures about 1 inch or deeper. A customer may decide to return it because of factory defects despite the utmost care on the mattresses.

The warranty is pro-rated, which means you would not have to pay for anything aside from shipping to have a mattress repaired or replaced.

Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme: They offer a 10-year non-prorated warranty for all their current models of the mattress. Recognized defects measure to about 0.75 inches or deeper. They also cover manufacturing defects as well.

At the end of the day, it looks like sweet dreams are more of a subjective matter. The science is there, given all the technological innovation and engineering that creators of these mattresses have poured into their products – but there is still the right amount of decision-making for you as a sleeper.

You are the captain of your ship.

If you want to sleep better and have that quality kind of life from day to day – there is no better time than now. To run to the nearest store, jump and test that mattress and decide what perfectly suits your needs.
