Puffy Mattress

4.6/5

Shopping for a mattress is hard work but we’ve taken out some of that stress for you by reviewing one of today’s most sought-after bed-in-box, the Puffy Mattress. A dual-layer, medium-firm, all-foam mattress, the Puffy Mattress provides features that almost every type of sleeper will love. It rates especially well for people looking to reduce back pain. We’ve also done a quick yet comprehensive comparison of the Puffy against the Nectar and the Purple so you can find out if it really is the best bed for you. Check out its full details by reading our full review below.

The Puffy Mattress is Puffy’s flagship mattress – what started it all for the growing company. Launched in 2016 after years of R & D, Puffy has quickly become one of America’s most popular bed-in-a-box brands, enjoying the top spot with online mattress giants like Purple and Casper. You may have seen them featured on The Ellen Show, where Ellen’s Angels agree that you’ll definitely sleep better on a Puffy.

But, the perennial concern of every mattress shopper is always wondering – is this mattress for me? What if it’s too firm? What if it’s too soft? What does it feel like, exactly? Our team of sleep experts has tested the Puffy Mattress so that we can provide you with an unbiased, comprehensive review to help you make a good decision before purchasing.

Over 100 hours were spent carefully examining the Puffy Mattress. We’ve also covered helpful information like sleep trial period, mattress warranty, shipping & returns, and their general customer service policies. We’ve added a section comparing the Puffy to other similar mattress brands, Nectar, and Purple as a bonus.

Quick View of the Puffy Mattress

Let’s take a quick look at the need-to-know information before we delve into the specifics.

Main Points

The Puffy Mattress is an all-foam mattress with a 2” cooling gel-infused memory foam as its top comfort layer, and its support core is made with contouring, body-conforming polyfoam, while its base is made of a 6” high-density polyfoam. The mattress itself is encased in a hypoallergenic, zip-n-wash cover. Materials are Oeko-Tex® certified, and CertiPUR-US® certified.

The overall feel is a cushiony, “sinking,” conforming feeling of most memory foam mattresses. What sets the Puffy Mattress apart, though, is that it genuinely is sturdily constructed, unlike most all-foam mattresses of the same price range.

If you’re not a big fan of memory foam or all-foam mattresses, this isn’t the right mattress for you. But if you love a medium-firm memory foam mattress and you’re looking for excellent spinal support that helps reduce back pain, then this is definitely what you’re looking for.

Puffy Mattress Sizes & Pricing

Competitive Pricing

The Puffy retails from $800 to a little over $1000, depending on the size you need. This is one of the more affordably-priced premium, USA-made mattresses in the market today. Considering Puffy offers a lifetime mattress warranty and a 101-night sleep trial with hassle-free returns, it may just be worth your money. They also offer a 14-night break-in period where you’re free to contact their support team to return your mattress within two weeks from purchase.

If you’re interested in exploring Puffy’s other mattresses, they also offer more upscale models, the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal. The Puffy Mattress is the most affordable option out of all Puffy’s mattress offerings.

Financing Options

Puffy also offers financing options at 0% APR via Klarna or Split for all their products. Application takes minutes, so you might want to look at that if you’re on a budget.

Available Sizes

In terms of size, the Puffy Mattress comes in a Twin Size up to a spacious California King.

While there are standard sizes for mattresses, it’s best to check the specific dimensions as there may be slight differences between brands. Mattress size is critical not just because it affects your sleep comfort but also – you don’t want to buy a mattress that doesn’t fit your box springs!

Construction & Design

The Puffy Mattress is made with four different foam layers that aim to provide spine relief and overall comfort to most types of sleepers. Let’s take a look at each layer one by one.

Cover Layer

puffy mattress front corner 1200xEncased in a comfortable, breathable Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Certified cover, you can be assured that you’ll sleep on a quality mattress that’s free from toxic chemicals. Puffy has also thought of everything the sleeper needs in a mattress cover beyond just sleeping on it. Here are some more great features about the Puffy Mattress cover:

Comfort Layer

Underneath the Puffy Mattress cover is a 2” gel-infused Cooling Gel Cloud Layer made of memory foam. One chief disadvantage of memory foam is its tendency to trap heat, making the sleeper feel warmer as the night progresses. To solve this problem, mattress manufacturers developed the technology of infusing memory foam with cooling gels.

The real question is: is it really cooling?

We’d love to say that “yes, this mattress felt cool throughout the night,” but our results show otherwise. Our tester, who has typically a warmer body temperature still felt hot on the Puffy Mattress. Not considerably so, but she did not feel that much of a “cooling” difference. While, yes, she was super comfortable, and yes, the mattress feels heavenly soft but also supportive, it did tend to get a bit on the warmer side.

So, if sleeping hot is a big deal-breaker for you, then you might want to consider other mattress types like a latex mattress or a hybrid mattress. Get some help from our sleep experts here at ID-MAG on how to choose the right mattress.

Tips to stay cool while snoozing:

You can keep a memory foam mattress cooler by investing in sleep accessories like a cooling mattress pad or natural latex pillows.

You also need to consider your room. Is your room too humid? A humid room can be just as stifling as a warm room and will affect your mattress’s temperature neutrality.

Transition Layer

Below the comfort layer is another 2” of high-grade polyfoam – Puffy’s Cooling Cloud™ & Firm Core Support foam. This durable support layer helps provide spinal alignment and contours the body while the sleeper moves about.

And we’ll tell you – Puffy did an excellent job! The combination of cushiony memory foam and a transition layer of firm polyfoam does wonders for back pain relief. This was a critical part of our testing process. We needed to know – do you really get up refreshed? Did you get pain-free sleep? And yes, we did.

A good mix of our back and side sleepers credited this support layer for how restful their sleep was on the Puffy Mattress. However, a combination sleeper who tends to sleep comfortably through the night on his stomach did not feel too supported. This tells us that just like with most all-foam mattresses, anyone who sleeps on their stomach may not be as comfortable. A firmer latex, innerspring, or hybrid mattress would be best for stomach sleepers.

Base Layer

The base layer or foundation of the Puffy Mattress is made with 6” of high-density polyfoam. While polyfoam is often associated with a low-quality mattress foam type, high-density polyfoam is quite the opposite. It is an incredibly sturdy and popularly-used support material in most bed-in-box mattresses. This layer is responsible for providing overall strength, support, and durability.

Firmness

PuffyMattressProductImage 1200xIt’s important to note that how firm a mattress feels depends on the height and weight of the person sleeping on it. So, if you’re on the lighter side of the spectrum, a firm mattress may feel just a bit firmer than a person who’s built heavier.

On that note, the Puffy Mattress offers a medium-firmness feel to average-sized sleepers. It is rated 5/10 on the firmness scale. Heavier sleepers might feel that an all-foam, medium-firm mattress might be a bit too soft for their liking, and instead of feeling supported, they may feel like they are “sinking.”

So, if you’re over 250 lbs. and you’re looking for firm support, this may not be the mattress for you. We would recommend either latex or innerspring mattresses for more durable support. But if you’re around 130 lbs., or thereabouts, you’ll love how this mattress feels.

Other Key Considerations for the Puffy Mattress

Now that we’ve covered the basics above, let’s discuss some of our further considerations when testing the Puffy Mattress.

Does this mattress provide back pain relief?

Yes, it does. Due to its medium-firm feel, its firm polyfoam support layer that allows the mattress to conform to the body and align the spine, it’s great for anyone looking to reduce back pain. However, take note that your height and weight can significantly affect this feature. Heavy sleepers may not feel supported on this mattress, as we have previously mentioned in the above section of this article.

Does this mattress offer pressure relief?

Pressure relief refers to the features of a mattress that allows it to evenly distribute body weight while promoting healthy blood circulation. This is a feature that is often necessary for someone who is bedridden or needs to be in bed for extended periods.

However, sleeping on a mattress that offers pressure relief isn’t just for anyone who’s ill. Anyone who’s had a long day at work will appreciate sleeping on a bed with pressure-relieving features. Pregnant women will appreciate pressure-relieving beds and pillows, too.

So, if you fit into any of the above or simply looking for a way to sleep better, then yes, the Puffy Mattress offers pressure relief thanks to its excellent foam layers working together to alleviate tension, provide comfort, and reduce pressure located in the lumbar region of the body. All of these combined make the Puffy Mattress ideal to relieve pressure for back sleepers.

Side sleepers should note that this mattress may result in slight pressure on the shoulders and hips. If you strictly sleep on your side the whole night, we recommend that you go for a softer mattress instead.

Does it offer durable edge support?

While the Puffy Mattress is sturdily constructed, we noticed that its mattress edges tend to bend easily whenever weight or pressure is set upon it. While it’s not anything significant, there is a chance that sleepers who tend to move about or like sleeping close to the edge of the bed may easily slide off. However, we didn’t experience this first-hand, but we did notice its weaker edge support construction compared with other similar mattress brands.

Also, it’s good to note that softer edges are pretty standard amongst all-foam mattresses. If you’re looking for extremely firm or durable edge support, try an innerspring and hybrid mattress because they are typically built with firmer coil layers.

Is it easy to move around or get out of bed?

As an ultra-conforming mattress, the Puffy mattress isn’t the best one with an easy surface to move around. Puffy mattress users may experience a hugging impression as soon as they lie on the bed. Once users move, their body’s impression tends to stay on the mattress. This is contrary to innerspring, hybrid, and even latex mattresses, which give a bouncier, springier feel.

Is it a great mattress for sex?

Puffy mattresses may not be ideal for sex than springier and more responsive beds that exhibit a “bounce” feeling suitable for movement. Foam mattresses tend to offer a lot of contours, making movement quite tricky.

One thing great about the Puffy mattress is that it’s virtually silent, making it a winner in the sex category. This is comparing it to innerspring and hybrid mattresses, which may tend to have creak or squeak sounds.

Does it have an off-putting chemical smell when unboxed?

As soon as it is opened, the Puffy mattress may tend to exhibit off-gassing. Although, this is a typical scenario for an all-foam bed. Off-gassing may often result from VOC or volatile organic compounds being released into the air coming from new mattresses. VOCs are usually off-gassed from a lot of manufactured products but especially noticeable with polyfoam.

But the good thing is, the Puffy mattress’ off-gassing can quickly dissipate in a day. All you need to do is place it in a well-ventilated room.

Does it have excellent motion isolation features?

The Puffy mattress provides excellent motion isolation as movement on the bed doesn’t cause motion to transfer across its entire surface since it is made of memory foam and polyfoam, which is known to isolate motion better than coils and springs.

This is great news, most especially for couples who share a bed. Couples can sleep soundly and will barely feel their partner moving about at night.

Does it give the sleeper a “sinking” feeling?

The Puffy mattress is rated as a medium-firm mattress, offering excellent support and mobility because of its soft foams and comfort layers. And yes, while there is a “cradling” feeling common to memory foam mattresses, there isn’t a notable sinking feeling thanks to its firm transition layer.

If you bought a lower-quality memory foam mattress, though, that may be something you’d experience. But with a quality mattress like this one, it’s less likely for users to feel stuck on this mattress.

Do they offer discounts for the military and first responders?

Yes. Puffy values our military and healthcare workers’ sacrifices by offering them a special discount. See if you qualify and find out how it all works by contacting Puffy directly.

Is this mattress eco-friendly?

Yes. The mattress cover is made from materials that are Oeko-Tex® certified, and the foams used are CertiPUR-US® certified. Puffy also makes sure to minimize waste by donating returned mattresses to their donation partners. Everytime a mattress is returned, the Puffy team works hard to make sure it is donated to someone in need.

Sleep Trial, Warranty & Shipping Policies

You can sleep well on your brand new Puffy knowing that the Puffy team has some seriously outstanding after-care services. We list them below.

101-Night Sleep Trial

Buying a mattress that’s purely available online comes with its own set of challenges. Online mattress brands like Puffy address these challenges by offering competitive sleep trials. This not only shows the brand’s confidence in the mattress itself but also gives the consumer a chance to try out the mattress – commitment-free.

How does Puffy’s 101-night sleep trial work?

Puffy offers their customers a chance to try any one of their mattresses for a full 101 nights. But what we love about Puffy is that you don’t even have to wait the entire sleep trial period to return your mattress and get a refund.

The company is so confident with their product that if you are unhappy with your Puffy Mattress for the first 14 nights, they won’t hesitate to issue a refund. But, of course, to make sure that you’re giving it a comprehensive trial, we recommend you to try it for the full 101 nights because a new mattress may need more than two weeks’ adjustment.

Here’s how the Puffy Sleep Trial works:

The same process applies to the 101-night sleep trial. After the 101st night, contact Puffy. They’ll swiftly arrange returns and refunds.

We’ve included Puffy’s full Returns Policy here. This is only up-to-date as of this article’s posting. Please always contact Puffy for any immediate concerns:

Puffy Mattress Competitors

necpur

Now that you’re familiar with Puffy Mattresses, let’s take a look and compare this bed to its top competitors: Nectar and Purple.

The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress

The Puffy Mattress and the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress are both popular bed-in-box options. If you haven’t encountered the term before, it means the companies will ship the mattress to you in a box. It is compressed to fit the box, and once opened, it expands to its full size.

Puffy was launched in 2016, and Nectar quickly followed a year later in 2017. Both have risen among the ranks of online mattress brands and have garnered a loyal customer base, awards, and recognitions.

We’ve gathered a summary of similarities and differences between these two brands so you can best decide which mattress is best for you.

Price Range

A Queen is the most commonly-ordered size for both these brands, so we’ll give you an estimate for this particular size:

Nectar (Queen) – $1000 – $1200
Puffy (Queen) – $1000 – no more than $1100

The above are regular retail prices. Check out the Puffy and Nectar websites, as they often offer promos and discounted rates.

Size

Both mattress brands offer a Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.
Nectar offers a 365-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

Have a careful look at both returns policies from the two websites. While a more extended sleep trial seems better, Nectar has a 30-day return policy, whereas Puffy has a 14-night night break-in period. This means that if you’re unhappy with your mattress, Puffy accepts returns and refunds within 14 nights, but Nectar requires a longer 30 days.

Before deciding, though, make sure to check out each mattress brand’s website for more specific information on their sleep trial, warranty, returns, and refunds.

Firmness

The Nectar Mattress comes in Firm & Medium Firm while the Puffy Mattress only comes in one firmness level – Medium Firm.

Construction

Both of these excellent mattress brands also feature thick memory foams that offer pressure relief to sleepers.

Comfort & Support

Similar to the Puffy Mattress, the Nectar Mattress is packed with in-depth body contouring features that is highly recommended for side sleepers who prefer soft, cushioning support. However, while the Puffy Mattress tends to sleep hot, the Nectar is best known for its cooling features. If sleeping warm is an issue for you, then this is something you need to consider.

correct 1

Best for:

Both mattresses are great for side sleepers of average weight (less than 230 – 250 lbs.)

wrong 1

Not best for:

Both mattresses are not ideal for stomach sleepers and anyone who isn’t a big fan of memory foam. Heavier-built individuals may not find these mattresses as supportive.

Which one should you pick?

This is honestly a hard decision to make. Both mattresses offer almost the same features at similar price tags. Both mattresses also cater to the same type of sleepers.

But we think it just goes down to price and the sleep trial. The Puffy simply has a lesser cost (albeit just shy of a few dollars from the Nectar), and a more hassle-free returns/refunds policy.

In just 14 nights, you can email Puffy with any issues, and they’re happy to facilitate free collection of the mattress and then issue a refund. The Nectar requires a full 30 days even with the more extended 365-night sleep trial. We think that when you buy a mattress online, it helps to be assured of easy returns.

Purple Mattresses

Compared to Puffy, Purple is a more established online brand that’s well-known in the highly-competitive mattress industry, but, interestingly, Purple was founded just one year before Puffy – in 2015.

Purple’s products work supremely well because their founders are both tech geniuses with years of experience in advanced aerospace materials, manufacturing, design, and project management. Combined with effective marketing strategies and good after-sales service, the result is a well-made, durable, and genuinely comfortable mattress-in-a-box.

Let’s see how the Puffy Mattress stands against the Purple Mattress.

Price Range

A Queen is the most commonly-ordered size for both these brands, so we’ll give you an estimate for this particular size:

Purple (Queen) – $1000 – $1200+
Puffy (Queen) – $1000 – no more than $1100

The above are regular, retail prices. Check out the Puffy and Purple websites, as they often offer promos and discounted rates.

Size

Both mattress brands offer a Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. However, the Purple offers a Split King size or, in essence, two twin size beds put together to form a King Size but with a gap or split in the middle.

A Split King is an excellent option for couples who like to share a bed but have different sleeping preferences.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.
Purple offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

In this sense, while both mattress brands offer almost the same number of nights for a sleep trial, the Puffy still provides a more competitive 14-night break-in period. This is where you can opt to return your mattress within 14 nights if you’re completely unhappy with your purchase. Purple, however, requires a longer minimum of 21 nights where the mattress can be returned/refunded “less the value of any discount, interest accrued, and/or shipping charges.”

Before deciding, though, make sure to check out each mattress brand’s website for more specific information on their sleep trial, warranty, returns, and refunds.

Firmness

The Purple Mattress comes in Firm & Medium Firm while the Puffy Mattress only comes in one firmness level – Medium Firm.

Construction

The Purple Mattress is constructed with high-grade foam layers that isolate motion, making it great for couples sleeping together and works great to relieve pressure, too. It is also built with a cooling, temperature-neutral Purple™ Grid, which helps provide this mattress with its cooling features. However, we still note some bounce coming off of the Purple Mattress when sleeping together with a partner.

While the Puffy mattress is constructed almost the same way (dual-layer comfort), its motion isolation features are practically perfect. We recommend the Puffy more for couples who love sleeping soundly together.

Comfort & Support

Purple’s claim to fame is the Purple Mattress’s innovative Purple™ Grid in addition to its dual-layer comfort layers. The gel grid features 1,800 air channels built into the temperature-neutral air grids that make it a great choice if you’re looking for a truly cooling mattress.

The Puffy Mattress offers a similar dual-comfort layer, but it does not provide the same kind of temperature-neutrality that the Purple Mattress offers. And this is why the Puffy Mattress tends to make sleepers warmer than usual.

If sleeping cool is an essential factor for you, then in this category, the Purple is a better choice.

correct 1

Best for:

The Purple Mattress is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers will be comfortable, too. Anyone looking for cooler sleep will also love the Purple.

The Puffy is excellent for back pain relief, so it’s great for both back sleepers and aligns the spine for side sleepers.

Anyone looking to own a high-quality memory foam mattress will love either the Purple or the Puffy.

wrong 1

Not best for:

Individuals weighing 230 – 250 lbs. and upwards should reconsider purchasing the Puffy or the Purple mattresses as these won’t feel too supportive to heavier sleepers. Regarding the Puffy, since it tends to trap heat, anyone who tends to sleep hot may want to consider purchasing a latex or innerspring mattress instead.

Which one should you pick?

As with our Nectar vs. Puffy comparison above, it’s challenging to choose between the Purple and the Puffy, as well. Both brands offer distinct features that make one better but also similar to the other.

Still, we think that Puffy’s 14-day break-in period stands out from the rest. It beats Nectar’s 30-day return period and Purple’s minimum return period of 21 nights. This may not be much of an issue for some, especially if you’re absolutely sure of your purchase but, if you want some reassurance that you’re able to return your mattress commitment-free, then the Puffy may just be the better option for you.

As always, we only offer our expertise as sleep health enthusiasts. It’s best to check out the specifics of sleep trials and returns from the respective mattress brand’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

While there is no need to flip the Puffy Mattress, the manufacturer recommends that you rotate the bed at 180 degrees at least once per year. This will help increase the lifespan of the mattress.

The Puffy Mattress is constructed with a high-quality, non-toxic Oeko-Tex® certified cover and CertiPUR-US® certified foams. However, if you are a sleeper with higher chemical sensitivities, you may want to consider purchasing a natural, organic mattress. It is an all-foam mattress, and it is made with a 2” memory foam comfort layer, a 2” polyfoam support core, and a 6” high-density polyfoam base layer.

Yes, it does. The Puffy mattress offers a 101-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

These are exclusively available on the Puffy website and not available in-stores.

Conclusion

No doubt, the Puffy Mattress ticks all the right boxes:

Do we recommend it? Yes, we do! If you do not want to spend a fortune on a premium memory foam mattress, the Puffy is an excellent choice. Compared with other similar brands, the Puffy’s excellent 14-day break-in period gives customers solid reassurance that the company is confident enough to offer a full refund for anyone who’s unhappy with it within two weeks of purchase.

What’s the downside? The Puffy Mattress tends to sleep hot. Based on our testing results, the Puffy could use some improvement on their cooling features. While it doesn’t get significantly warm, it still tends to trap heat. We look forward to more innovations to this particular mattress soon.

A bit disappointed because it arrived so late but honestly, it’s super comfortable. It’s just that I was hoping to get it before my in-laws arrived. Still, when it finally did, it’s everything that I expected. Hope it doesn’t sag in the middle like my old mattress.

After giving birth 6 years ago, MY BACK HAS NEVER STOPPED HURTING! It was just a pain getting up, a pain getting back to bed. It’s especially bad during cold weather. A friend introduced me to the Puffy Mattress (we wanted the nicer ones – Lux and Royal) which is what we could afford and I have never slept so well! Even my kids love curling up with me and my husband! It feels warm, comforting and yeah, it’s like being in a cloud!yeah, there you go, you should go get a Puffy!

Once you go Puffy you can’t turn back. We just bought pillows, too. My wife loves it. It’s been with us for about a year now and it still feels exactly the same. Waited a year to review this because we’ve had some experience with beds feeling uncomfortable after sleeping on it for a year.

I bought a Puffy for my 17 year old son! He loves it so much, we’re getting ours soon! We just need to figure out what to do with our old one. We got him some other Puffy bedding, too. We ordered the blanket and some pillows. We’re looking into the dog bed for our senior dog.

Honestly can’t rave enough about this mattress. We’ve waited 8 years to get a new one and the bed we owned before that was a hand-me-down from my mom so technically, it’s been a LOOONG time since I bought myself a new mattress. We’re so happy we chose the Puffy Mattress. We have 2 now. One for us and a new one for a room we’re planning to rent out.
